ArtBecause I’ve decided to focus more on music this year, I didn’t do very many drawings. Those that I did do were mostly out of a burst of inspiration and emotion. Of course I drew a few characters, but those were scattered throughout, as always. The characters I drew were Crystal (aged), Chris and Logan (new characters!), Pearl and Tori. I may have drawn a few new characters, but they don’t quite have stories yet. I tried a bit more realism at the beginning and the end, these few times without references. The first was originally of myself, but then it turned into someone else. At least the face shape is similar. Then finally, I drew Tori a little more realistically than normal. My favorite two pieces were “Ready for the Night Before Chaos” and “But Luca Loves You”. In them, I tackled something that I’ve had immense trouble with – full, standing bodies. I normally make the characters too tall, so that their feet are dangling off the edge. But somehow – I did it with these two. On “Ready for the Night Before Chaos” I was inspired by the success of the premier of my marimba and vibraphone duet, “The Night Before Chaos.” The confident pose I sport may not be how I FELT when I performed, but I’ve had enough experience to know that I become how I act. So I put on a face of confidence. Then “But Luca Loves You” became a practice for MANY things I had trouble with, including wrinkles and cats. I wrote a little story to go with it; if you’d like to read it, click here. And finally, I drew example pieces of what I would be offering up for commissions (people tell you what art they want, you make it and they buy it). I really, really enjoyed making these, and if you’re interested in buying one, click here! WritingNot much to say here, again. Of course, I have many, many thoughts swimming through my head, but no writing projects got finished. However, I have a few ideas up my sleeve that just MIGHT get finished in March. I’m also considering doing Camp NaNo again this April. It was super fun and motivating last year, and I have new ideas for the same novel that could definitely use another revision. MusicAnd here we are!! This is the good stuff, everyone. I decided late in February that I would begin composing early every morning. Because of that, I produced more music than I thought I could in such a short time! Of course, there have been obvious ups and downs, but working in the morning really does work – even for a night owl. The first piece I composed was decidedly simple and sweet. It’s called “The Way Things Should Be,” and the piece wove a little story in my mind as I composed it: two friends musing on their lives and old experiences together, good and bad. The second piece I composed was a surprise for me – I could hardly believe I had written it. I called it “Vibraphone Keys in the Breeze” because I could imagine a tropical island where all the foliage was silver, tinkling this carefree music in the wind. I’m very proud of the organization and variation in it. I composed it in 2 and ½ hours. (Goodness, the more I listen to it, the more it sounds like a ringtone… xD ) The third piece… ugh. “Slide” was started a whiiiile ago. And the other melody I used in it was also old. I used the rhythm from the hand clap game Slide to base the rhythms off of, but gosh, I hate the way it came out. I finished composing it just after “Vibraphone Keys,” and I feel like there’s some sort of pattern happening here. I compose something I love, then shortly after that, I can’t make anything I like. Sigh. Here’s the link anyway… Finally, this last piece called “For Psytechna. From Lily.” was dedicated to a Noteflight member who is battling mental illness. I saw another member compose something for him, and I thought it was just the kindest thing. So I composed my own! I learned quite a bit about my creative process when it comes to music this month. I could tell you all the details, but suffice it to say that I am now on a sleep schedule and morning routine that should allow me to compose the best music I can every day. I’m so excited to see what March may bring!!
